The Make-A-Wish Foundation aims to bring joy to children suffering from life-threatening diseases by making one of their wishes come true. It started in 1980 with the help of Chris, a seven-year-old child with leukemia. Chris dreamt of being a police officer who wanted to catch the bad guys with his friend, former U.S. Customs Agent and Make-A-Wish co-founder Tommy Austin. People wanted to support Austin’s call for making Chris happy, and a lot of people went out of their way to make a police uniform for the child. There were also friends who set up battery-powered motorcycles for Chris’ complete getup.

But Chris had to go back to the hospital the next day. Chris loved what his friends prepared for him and gave the people who have done so much for him a beautiful smile. Sadly, Chris died.

The first official Make-A-Wish kid was Bopsy. He was much like Chris, but he had three wishes: to go to Disneyland, be a firefighter, and to ride a hot air balloon. Bopsy also passed away, but his mother thought the gesture was meaningful for her child.
